Early Season Happenings

On Victoria Day we gathered at the green for the first jitney of a very busy week. The official season opener was held on Wednesday May 22 at 7 p.m. with an excellent turnout despite the cool weather. Our new club mascot ‘George’ was on hand to welcome everyone. Indeed, ‘George’ is our favourite new bowler of the 2019 season!

Through a marketing blitz of the village and an information booth at the Carp Expo in Brantford, approximately 20 folks attended during Open House days on May 24 & 25 to ‘Give it a Try’. On the evening of May 25, it was our pleasure to be the group welcoming folks attending the monthly Community BBQ hosted by the St. George Legion. Commencing Saturday morning, June 1 at 10 a.m. and running for 5 weeks, coaches will be at the club to offer Learn to Bowl instruction. This is an excellent, free one-on-one opportunity for anyone interested in trying the sport.

Helen and Floyd Doctor of Smokey Hollow Estates sponsored the first tournament of the season, held at the club on Thursday, May 30. Bowlers enjoyed the good condition of the green and also the delicious rhubarb desserts prepared and served by club members. Following three excellent games, the Les Doctor Memorial Trophy was awarded to the Burlington team of Remi Canuel, Joan Way, and Theresa Kennedy with 3 wins and 44 points. Placing second was the St. George team of Al Scott, Tilly Mannen and Sandi Scott with 2 wins and 46. Taking third prize was the Ancaster team of Frank Pring, Kathy Smith and Laura Ritchie with 2 wins and 44+2. The one game high aggregate winner was the John Duguay team of Ancaster. St George LB Club hosts 10 tournaments during the season. These events are supported through the sponsorship of many community individuals and businesses and their generosity is greatly appreciated by all bowlers.
